I am gay Roscommon Ireland

A Tribute to Dermot Earley () | Martin Wynne

Published in the Roscommon Herald on June 29th I do not think it is an exaggeration to say that the name Dermot Earley was familiar to me before I even learned how to walk or talk. Having been born in the s into a sports-obsessed family, daily conversations between parents, uncles and family friends would have been peppered with references to the great footballer from Gortaganny. The name was buried deep into my subconscious mind before I knew what a football even looked like. As a child growing up during the last great era for Roscommon football I did not have far to look for a sporting icon.

The great Kerry and Dublin teams of that period held little sway when you had a home-grown hero who stood just as tall. A second uncle owned a pub on the corner of Main Street in Boyle and it was there that I had the privilege of being part of the great All-Ireland final experience of that year.

It was like no noise I had ever heard before and probably since. In that moment I experienced a sporting awakening that left an indelible mark. I have little doubt that the career path I chose to follow later in life can be traced back to that extraordinary moment in time. Dermot Earley was the heartbeat of Roscommon football during those incredible days.

He created memories that would last a lifetime and live in the heart of every Roscommon person who was there to experience it. I feel so blessed to have been around for those exciting times. Roscommon lost out narrowly in that All-Ireland final and we have not been back in one since. The great team of the s broke up after that but Dermot kept playing until I attended my first ever Connacht final that same year and proudly watched my cousin Gary line out at corner-back alongside the great legend of Roscommon football. The result did not go our way against Mayo that day but a fine new team was in the process of being built.

They would go on to win a couple of Connacht titles and come within a whisker of taking the county back to an All-Ireland final in Dermot Earley retired from intercounty football that day in at the ripe old age of He had hung around for 20 years and stayed just long enough to offer his inspirational qualities to a new generation of successful Roscommon footballers. I saw at first hand the esteem he was held in that day when the triumphant Mayo players interrupted their celebrations to carry Dermot off the pitch shoulder high into his retirement.

Last week the sad news came through of the passing of a legend. Rest in peace Dermot. One of the most fascinating aspects of the All-Ireland Football Final was that it brought together two of the most iconic midfielders in the history of the game. On the opposing side was a man who would anchor the Kerry midfield for the best part of two decades. I would have played against him at least once a year. He was lining out for Sarsfields and I was with Leixlip.

Roscommon won a good supply of ball in the first-half but neither side dominated the other. Roscommon played really well but missed a lot of chances from frees.

It was a wet and windy day and the free-taking caught up on them in the end. That seemed to drain them and we came back to win by a couple of points.

He was equally good in winter or summer. In some ways the heavier ground suited him better because he was so strong and physically built. He was a committed GAA man and wore the county jersey with pride. He was hugely competitive every time he played whether it was at club level or county level. And he was the same off the pitch. I had a lot of dealings with Dermot down through the years in Kildare and he was always very courteous and a nice man to meet and have a chat with. Gay Sheerin wore the Number One jersey for Roscommon in the All-Ireland final and the first man he would always look for when he placed the ball on the yard line was Dermot Earley.

When the chips were down you would always look to Dermot. Many people have been speaking in glowing terms about Dermot Earley in the past week since his sad passing. The striking thing is how those who played alongside him all seem to describe him in similar fashion. Journal Media does not control and is not responsible for the content of external websites.

It was the only constituency to do so. Indeed, Donegal South-West went Yes by just 33 votes. So why? Screwed over by government on issues like healthcare access, job creation and clean drinking water, these are not people who deserve that treatment. Many rural people felt talked down to and alienated. They felt shouted at. They got left behind by the Yes campaign which is worth reflecting on.
