Michael Rooney, a stevedore and aspiring singer, who is in love with Kathleen, sings at the wake. Michael buys travel tickets for Kathleen, Pat and Sheila to travel to his aunt's farm in Ireland. They live happily there, except for the interference of another aunt, Hannah, who tries to get rid of Kathleen, and to send Pat and Sheila to an orphanage. Hannah's nephew, Dennis O'Dwyer, an older but rich landowner, falls in love with Kathleen, but Hannah opposes the match as she regards Kathleen as socially inferior to her family. As part of her scheme to block the relationship, Hannah sends her gambling brother, Uncle Sean, across the border with horses purportedly belonging to Dennis, with the hope that Dennis as the owner of the horses would be given a prison sentence and therefore would not be able to marry Kathleen, Hannah's scheme is thwarted when Michael decides to pursue his singing career, thus leaving Kathleen and Dennis together.
